We had a chance to sit down with Sandra Barry, Executive Director of the Light of the World Clinic and tour the impressive facility of Broward County’s best-kept secret. In 2016 alone, Light of the World Clinic provided medical care for over 723 uninsured patients living in Broward County, all of whom live below the poverty line. With help from their numerous volunteers, from front desk to the exam rooms, this nonprofit has definitely become a light of the sometimes unpleasant world.

As one of the only free health clinics left in South Florida, the expansive team of 59 licensed and 295 non-licensed volunteers face tough facts when acquiring patients that need care.

“One of the main challenges we face being a nonprofit with a limited budget is reaching out to new patients that aren’t aware that they do have help right down the road,” says Sandra.

With volunteer specialists assisting uninsured patients from family medicine, dermatology, pediatric care, and even acupuncture, Sandra and her team always find practical methods in helping their patients in any way they can. “We experienced over 12,600 patient encounters last fiscal year; including 876 free health screenings to adults and children in the local community. Offering all of these services under one roof is unique and we are incredibly proud and grateful for the work we do.”

Sandra’s statement is evidently true. There’s not one unhappy face in the entire facility, all the volunteers and patients were beaming with gratitude and purpose. The clinic’s short and long-term work seems to pay off. With over 8,940 volunteer service hours and donated medical supplies valued at ($1,828,780) almost two-million dollars, there’s no wonder the clinic still makes waves in the South Florida community.
